CHARLES RUSSELL

Charles Russell.jpg

Charles is a Midlands boy whose career has woven through hospitality and the funeral sector. It is the funeral sector that he now calls home supporting families at one of the most difficult times in life.

Music plays a huge part in that. It can tell stories and take us back to moments places and people. It can lift a room or soften it and it can say things that are hard to put into words. This connection with music is what Charles brings to Torbay Radio on Sunday evenings with Charlie’s Choice from 7 till 9 pm. The show blends his own picks with requests from listeners sent in live from the studio. All genres and years! With a quiz there for good measure! A space where memories are shared and happily played.

You can catch me every Thursday evening from 7 - 9pm.

I like to play the sounds of the 70's, 80's and 90's hits that takes us back to our younger years where we can reminisce and enjoy the great hits gone by.

I also play a classic golden oldie, a number one song blast from the past and into the second hour, I play 3 back-to-back Love Songs to relax before you snooze.

This is the show for you.

All that and events happening around the bay, what a better way to spend your Thursday evening with me.

Helga Beer.jpeg

HELGA BEER

Hello, I’m Helga Beer — writer, wildlife enthusiast, and firm believer that local radio is one of life’s great comforts. I’m the sort of person who can spend the morning rescuing a slightly bewildered hedgehog, the afternoon scribbling ideas into a notebook, and the early evening happily chatting away on the radio with a cup of tea that’s gone cold because I forgot about it. Again.

I host The Monday Mixtape, a 5–7pm show designed to help you shake off the last crumbs of Monday and ease into the evening with something warm, familiar and just a little bit sparkly. Expect feel‑good favourites, clever surprises, and the occasional indie gem slipped in with the enthusiasm of someone who genuinely loves making a good playlist. If your Monday has been a bit of a plot twist, consider this your gentler chapter.

As a writer — and the author of Don’t Panic by Helga K Beer — I’ve always believed that stories connect us. Songs do too. They remind us where we’ve been, who we’ve loved, and what we’ve survived (including Mondays). So I love hearing from listeners: your requests, your memories, your musical curveballs, your “this song always gets me dancing while I stir the pasta” moments. They’re all welcome here.

So join me for The Monday Mixtape — a cosy corner of the airwaves where we unwind together, share a few tunes, and make Monday feel, well, a little less… Monday.

STEWSTA

Stewsta’s journey behind the decks began in 1991 with his first pair of Technics 1210s,
cutting his teeth at local house parties and on pirate radio. From the very start, his sound
was rooted in the deeper, soulful side of house music.
During the 2000s, Stewsta was based in Brighton, where he became a familiar name
across the city’s club scene, playing at iconic venues including The Zap, The Honey Club,
Ocean Rooms, and Babylon Lounge. He was also involved in the early days of
Soulshyne, working alongside Brighton’s “Godfather of House,” Mick Fuller.
Stewsta’s sets are defined by quality, groove, and soul — blending soulful, funky, and
classic house with timeless selections from artists such as Louie Vega, Masters at Work,
Spen, Kings of Tomorrow, Crackazat, Demuir, Terry Hunter, and Maurice Joshua.
A DJ with deep roots and a true love for the music, Stewsta continues to deliver authentic
house vibes wherever he plays.
